Invite Customers to Tell You Their Stories
Simply ask people to tell you their story of how they’ve used your products to solve particular problems. You can do this with a submission link on your site, or occasionally send an email encouraging submissions. Edit and publish these on your site, again encouraging readers to submit their stories.
Run Customer Polls and Surveys
Quick polls can be a bit of fun and the results can attract links and coverage. Polls are quite easy to set up and they can add a lot of interest to your blog. But polls don’t provide too much depth. If you want to be taken more seriously, consider a more detailed market survey. You can find lots of information about how to create robust market surveys.
Such surveys can give you lots of information direct from your customers. You can:
- Find out exactly what your customers feel they need.
- Discover how customers use your products and what problems your products solve for them.
- Recruit volunteers to give you feedback in the future.
- Recruit volunteers for case studies.
- Collect customer testimonials.
Run contests
Set up a contest where you reward the best content that people submit. Ask them to write a story of a particular length about your products eg, 200 or even 500 words. We think that it is a fair bet that the “trend-setting clubs, bars and lounges nationwide” will link to their bartender’s recipes on the Sunkist website. And, of course, video is a perfect medium for user generated content. Videos can be excellent for giving you promotional ideas and also for attracting links.
Tips on user generated content
- Show clearly that you’re interested in what your users think and offer them a variety of ways to make their feelings heard.
- Respond to any comments quickly and politely.
- Don’t forget to respond to positive as well as negative comments.
- Actively seek out your customers’ opinions through formal surveys and occasional polls.
- Create fun opportunities to engage with your customers – contests, publications, video interviews, customer stories, etc.
- Don’t just pay lip service to customers’ comments. Incorporate their suggestions in what you offer.
